The Girls – WEekly Challenge #1

WEekly Challenge

WEekly Challenge #1 was to make a song inspired by a recently watched movie. The movie that inspired me was The Virgin Suicides. For those of you who don’t know, The Virgin Suicides is a fun little adventure about a group of young and kooky sisters, and the wacky neighborhood boys who love them.

SPOILER ALERT: At the end of the movie, the girls invite the boys over for what was supposed to be an end of the year slumber party extravaganza, but shortly after the boys arrive, they quickly discover that it isn’t a slumber party at all. Instead, they find that it is a blonde girl sister suicide party. Woooooooo! Parrrrttyyyy!

That’s why this song is a bit of a “heavy metal death march of impending doom”. It doesn’t contain a lot of words, but the four that I use are truly breath taking. Can you guess which four words they are? I’ll give you a hint… two of them are in the title.

Heritage USA (WEekly Challenge #1)

When Mike issued the first WEekly Challenge to write a song based on a movie watched in the last 4 weeks, I went straight to my Netflix account to see what I had watched recently. It turns out I watch mostly documentaries(and tv shows). One of the best documentaries I’ve watched recently is “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”.

Narrated by RuPaul, this documentary tells the story of televangelist, singer, and all around cool person, Tammy Faye Bakker Messner. This movie has everything. Drug abuse, sex scandals, embezzlement, and puppets!

I found one of the most interesting things in the movie is “Heritage USA“, a Christian Theme Park resort built by Jim and Tammy Faye and the PTL Club(“Praise The Lord”). All of the money for this theme park came donations and it’s amazing to me how much money they were able to raise!

So my song this week is a jingle for Heritage USA.  It was really fun to make and I hope you enjoy. Hooray!!!

Introducing: The WEekly Challenge

WE receive dozens of e-mails a week saying “Why don’t you guys post more new music online? I just can’t get enough WE!”

In an effort to satisfy the desires of our fans, spark creativity, and to keep Ben from watching too much Netflix, WE have decided to start a weekly challenge. Every week a new challenge will be presented and the participants will have two weeks to complete the challenge. The main focus of The WEekly challenge will be songwriting, but WE plan on branching out into other creative endevours as well (video, ice sculpture, scrapbooking etc…). Although WE have two weeks to complete a challenge, WE will always have two challenges overlapping each other so that WE can post new material every week.

WEekly Challenge #1

For our first week, Mike has issued this challenge to Ben.

Write and record a song inspired by any movie you watched in the past 4 weeks.
Failure to complete the challenge will result in having to wash the other person’s car when convenient.

This challenge is already in progress and the results will be posted on Monday, June 6th. Stay tuned for more details about The WEekly Challenge.

What is Grudge Rock?

What is Grudge Rock?

Grudge Rock is a “rock n’ roll game show”. We take two local bands, any type of music, and make them play a game similar to the classic game show Family Feud, the added twist being that all the questions are about what bands know best: music! The bands score points, and the winning band gets All The Door Money, the losing band gets Fabulous Consolation Prizes and both bands play live and rock!

WE have had the pleasure of being on Grudge Rock twice now, and it is super awesome. The creator, Jake Stratton, wants to make a pilot episode for the web so that Grudge Rock can be the next internet sensation. You can help make that dream a reality by donating to the cause. Plus, word on the street is that there is a very good chance that We Wrote the Book on Connectors will be featured in the pilot episode. But you didn’t hear that from me…

Help a brother out.

This Sunday, May 22nd at Chop Suey – The Bushwick Book Club Presents: Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman!

The Bushwick Book Club

poster by Travis Young

The Bushwick Book Club is not your run of the mill book club. Much like any, we act upon the urge to read and to have discussions about what we read. But we found that this was not enough for us. When we read books, we also want to write songs about them. And when we write songs, we like to perform them for an audience. Now, all we need is for you to read Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman (adventures of a curious character) and come join us! You will not be disappointed!

As an officier of The Bushwick Book Club, I am currently reading the book and will be sure to have a special song prepared for you all this Sunday at Chop Suey. These shows are super fun and they ALWAYS sell out. Get your tickets now if you want to go.

Grudge Rock preview

Our pals over at Sound on the Sound had some nice words to say about us when they previewed our upcoming Cinco De Mayo Grudge Rock showdown vs. M. Bison.

WE Wrote The Book On Connectors are former champions of Grudge Rock, have you heard of them? Most importantly, have you seen them? Off the top of my head, I can’t name a single local band that puts on a more fun show than this rock act. No ma’am, I’m not stroking the egos of anyone. I’ve got my thinking cap on and I’ve extended my search to galaxies far away using the most optimal search engines imaginable. Nothing.
