Calimocho- WEekly Challenge #4

Calimocho is a surprisingly yummy drink that consists of 1 part cola and 1 part red wine poured over ice. I prefer to use 3 Buck Chuck and Shasta (boxed wine is also a good choice). Calimocho is a common beverage in the Baier household since it is delicious, cheap, and refreshing.

I decided to drink a bunch of Calimocho and make this song. I think it shows. This song didn’t exactly turn out the way I had planned, but that’s ok. Sometimes that’s just the way it goes with Calimocho. This song is best enjoyed with a couple glasses of Calimocho.

The Bushwick Book Club presents: original music inspired by “A People’s History of the United States”

The Bushwick Book ClubThe Bushwick Book Club Presents:
original music inspired by A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn
Date: July 3rd, Doors at 5pm
Location: Fred Wildlife Refuge (127 E Boylston Seattle, WA 98102) Enter on Belmont

Tickets: $10 general admission, get them here: purchase tickets

The Bushwick Book Club is going to bring you America like you have never seen it before. We will take you all the way back to when Christopher Columbus first set foot on these great shores, and write music inspired by it. Then we won’t stop until we hit the present day! 12 songwriters are going to bring you visions of the USA and more through songwriting. Not only will there be music, but a delicious array of “down-home” American foods available.

The Bushwick Book Club is not your run of the mill book club. Much like any, we act upon the urge to read and to have discussions about what we read. But we found that this was not enough for us. When we read books, we also want to write songs about them. And when we write songs, we like to perform them for an audience.

We also love being in this great country and getting the chance to do all that we do. So we decided to write music inspired by A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn. But that’s not all! We are going to bring to you some of the best American food, sing some of the great American songs, and generally do this party up right!

This event is going to include delicious “American” food made by Martin Woods, one of the great chefs in Seattle.

The music is going to feature a fine group of local musicians writing original music inspired by the book. They will include: Bucket of Honey, Wes Weddell, Tai Shan, Ben Gilmer, Levi Fuller, MoZo, Tubaluba, Mike Votava, Eloise and Aleksandra, Eric Lane Barnes, Del Rey and Vince Mtz. These musicians span a wide range of musical influence and performance.

It is sure to be an amazing experience for the audience and the performers!

WEekly Challenge #3 FAIL!!!!

Let it be known that there are severe consequences for accepting a WEekly challenge and not completing it. Due to a bunch of boring reasons that I choose not to go into at the moment, I failed to complete WEekly Challenge #3, which was to invent a slow jam. To my credit, i got about 70% done. But 70% done is not good enough! Is it?!!!!! No, it is not.

As a result, as stated in the bi-laws of WEekly challenge # 3, I had to buy Kerry a bunch of tacos. In the picutre above you can see Kerry just moments before she is about to feast upon said tacos from La Gloria’s, the finest tacos in all of Bellingham, courtesy of my crapulence.

As you can see, WE are not fucking around here! WE take these WEekly challenges very seriously, and so should you. You have been warned.

If you know what I mean-WEekly Challenge #3

WEekly Challenge #3So I thought this challenge was going to be an easy one. Boy was I wrong! I came up with two or three different ideas and on the last day of the challenge scrapped everything and wrote this song. I had some help and encouragement from Emily on this one(if you know what I mean!). I found I had a hard time writing a serious Slow Jam so I went the other direction and made it silly. Big surprise huh?

My synthesizer is in the shop and I was hoping it would be done in time for this challenge, but it’s not so I mostly used my trusty Yamaha PSR-500. This is the keyboard my parents gave me for my birthday back in 1993. The sounds are pretty cheesy, but I it has 100 different instrument sounds so usually I can find something that works.

Let me know what you think. Should I continue to write slow jams exclusively or move on to another style?

WEekly Challenge #3

No matter how crazy this world gets, one thing will always remain certain. Everybody loves a good slow jam, especially the ladies. That is why WEekly challenge #3 is to invent a slow jam that will sooth your body, relax your mind, entice your soul, and set the mood just just right… awwwwwww yeeeaaaahhh… that sounds real gooood… awwwwwww yeeeeaaahhh… damn girl…

Our slow jams will be posted on Monday, June 20th.

Since WE-super-fan, Kerry, suggested the slow jam challenge, failure to complete it will result in having to buy her a bunch of tacos. She loves tacos… awwwwww yeaaaaahhhh…

If You Didn’t – WEekly Challenge #2

WEekly Challenge

Writing songs for kids isn’t much different than writing songs for adults, at least, that’s what I think. It’s pretty much the same thing. The challenge for this week was to make a children’s song. No problem, this shit was easy. Here is what I came up with. My goal was to make something that both kids and adults could enjoy. Personally, I find this song to be more fun than a kick in the crotch.

Please take a listen and let me know what you think.

Bring on the next challenge!

The Golden Rule-WEekly Challenge #2

Hey kids,

When I started thinking about writing a children’s song I thought about things that I learned as a child from my parents, teachers, and other old people. One of the most important things my mom taught me from an early age was The Golden Rule:One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. It just makes so much sense to me and it’s something that I want to teach to my (future)kids.

Since it’s a song for little children I tried to write something short and simple and repetitive.

Hooray,
Ben

WEekly Challenge #2

Hey there kids!

This weeks challenge is one from me(Ben) to Mike.

Over the last year or so I have played bass  in the band Brian Vogan and His Good Buddies This experience has introduced me to the world of children’s music!

Many rock stars are now turning to Children’s Music. It’s SO HOT RIGHT NOW! If it were any more hot, it wouldn’t be suitable for children. So I figured we should join the fun.

WEekly Challenge #2

Write a children’s song. Failure to complete the challenge will result in having to wash the other person’s car.  Results of this challenge will be posted on Monday, June 13th.

Now enjoy this video from Caspar Babypants(aka Chris Ballew of The President’s of the United States of America). Hooray!!!
